Philharmonic Generations Vienna was founded in autumn 2018 by Fritz Pfeiffer. Known for many years as Principal Horn of the Vienna Philharmonic, Pfeiffer now captivates wide audiences as a conductor. A defining experience in his artistic journey was his collaboration with Leonard Bernstein, whom Pfeiffer regarded as a mentor and role model. Bernstein’s commitment to an open society and his ability to transcend boundaries deeply inspired him. This inspiration ultimately led to the creation of Philharmonic Generations Vienna.
Philharmonic Generations Vienna is dedicated to building bridges across generations and cultures. The ensemble brings together former members of the Vienna Philharmonic and young, exceptionally talented musicians. Through this collaboration, Vienna’s musical tradition is preserved while simultaneously enriched by fresh ideas and innovation. The seasoned Philharmonic musicians share their expertise with the younger colleagues and serve as mentors, using the universal language of music to break down barriers and foster an inclusive artistic community.
The orchestra’s repertoire spans both Vienna’s musical heritage and contemporary works. Since 2019, the ensemble has been shaping the Chinese New Year Concert in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna—a celebration of friendship between China and Austria.
Beyond its performances in Austria, Philharmonic Generations Vienna is also active internationally. In selected countries, the musicians spend several days working with young local talents on specific pieces, which are then presented in concerts or on tour.
The aim of these concerts is to foster intercultural exchange and strengthen musical collaboration. Young musicians in the host country gain the opportunity to learn from Vienna’s rich musical heritage and the experience of members of the Vienna Philharmonic.
