Sona MacDonald

The singer-actress Sona MacDonald was born in Vienna and grew up in the United States. Apart from appearing in leading classical stage roles and musical roles in the National Theaters of Berlin, Vienna and Munich- ranging from Desdemona to Maria Stuart to My Fair Lady to Les Miserables- she has also starred in many TV series in Germany and Austria.
She recorded the role of Polly in Threepennyopera with the Ensemble Modern with Max Raabe for BMG Classics. It has been performed in concert at the Elisabeth Hall in London, the Cologne Philharmonic, Berlin Konzerthaus and Frankfurt Alte Oper.
She has sung Seven Deadly Sins by Kurt Weill with many major orchestras under the direction of HK Gruber and Dennis Russell Davies.
At the Salzburg Festival she appeared in Mahagonny and in Threepenny Opera.
At the Berlin Philharmonic she appeared with Dietrich Fischer Dieskau in Königskinder.
For many years Sona MacDonald has sung the songs of Marlene Dietrich and even portrayed her in an original play “ Mythos Marlene” in Stuttgart.
She is currently playing the role of Marlene Dietrich at the State Theater in Vienna (Burgtheater) in SPATZ und ENGEL, a play with music, about the friendship between Marlene Dietrich and Edith Piaf.
